Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse is an intriguing, fast-paced, suspenseful, well-written novel. The setting is now, or in the very near future, about a group of survivalists originally from Chicago, who flee to their safe place in Northern Idaho. The group started about nine years prior to the main timeline, having met while most were in college. The members of the group felt as if something major was going to happen in the future, and they wanted to be ready for "it." They didn't know at the time what was going to trigger the event; whether it would be a nuclear or biological attack, or something elseso they prepared for several possible scenarios.
The event, called in the novel "The Crunch," is a worldwide economic crash that soon takes the country into a TEOTWAWKI (the end of the world as we know it) scenario, like some people felt might happen with the turn of the century computer problem (y2k). The Crunch starts with runaway inflation, the government trying to respond by printing more money, a full blown worldwide socio-economic collapse, anarchy, a foreign invasion of the United States of America and a second Civil War to re-establish true freedom and democracy in the USA.
The story is about how this group copes with the collapse. It covers how they planned for the event; skills they learned, things they did, and products they acquired to prepare for the event. Throughout the story lots of practical ideas are written into the plot. And to my surprise, several real people and companies were used in the story line. It even solved my problem of where to purchase an item I've been seeking.
But this is more than just a novel,
its a gold mine of information.

It is packed with useful information on how to survive a disaster. The main character is Todd Gray, an accountant from Chicago in his early 30s. He is a conservative Christian survivalist and the leader of an eight-member retreat group, a group of like-minded survivalists. Two years before the onset of a stock market crash and socioeconomic collapse, Todd and his wife Mary buy a farm in rural north-central Idaho. The Crunch occurs. Mass inflation and a stock market crash are followed by absolute chaos in the cities and suburbs. There is widespread, continuous looting and arson that cause massive loss of life and property. The federal and state governments essentially disappear En route to the retreat, group members encounter many dangerous situations. Their many adventures are detailed. A chilling novel because reality is just around the corner.
An earlier draft edition of the novel
was circulated as shareware and had nearly 90,000 downloads in the mid-1990s,
well before the Internet became heavily populated in the early 21st century.

Patriots is a novel about a socioeconomic collapse in the near future. It was described by one reviewer as a "survival manual fairly neatly dressed as fiction." There are so many useful details included that most people find themselves taking notes as they read it.
Printing History:
There was some confusion about the various editions of the novel. Some people have written asking if Patriots is a sequel to the Triple Ought or TEOTWAWKI draft editions. It isn't. Rather, it is a thoroughly fleshed-out edition of the same story line. There is a wealth of new technical detail in Patriots, and even some new characters. Much of the material was suggested by readers from all around the globe who had read one the draft shareware editions. I greatly appreciate their input!
To avoid any further confusion, let me explain the various iterations of the novel:
1.) The Gray Nineties was the title of a 19 chapter draft edition of the novel. It was distributed as shareware via the Internet from 1995 to 1997. There were 17,000 copies downloaded.
2.) Triple Ought was a 27 chapter draft edition of the novel. It was distributed via the Internet from 1997 to early 1998. It was highly successful, with 82,000 downloads logged from the main site and 11 mirror sites in North America and Europe. The various Triple Ought sites were linked by more than 150 web sites dedicated to Christian, patriotic, survival, and Y2K issues. It was reviewed in a variety of on-line publications as well as print publications such as American Survival Guide magazine and The Idaho Observer.
3.) TEOTWAWKI : The End of the World as We Know It was a 33 chapter expanded self-published edition of the novel, printed and Velo bound in 8-1/2 x 11 format. It included six appendices. Note: TEOTWAWKI was never distributed as shareware. It was sold during 1997 and 1998. This was a limited edition, with just 1,600 copies printed.
4.) Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse was the title of a 31 chapter (352 page) abridged edition of the novel that was in trade paperback from Huntington House. It was in print from November of 1998 to January of 2005, and was consistently their best-selling title. It went through three editions and nine printings, with 37,500 copies sold.
5.) Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse (Expanded Edition) was the title of a 33 chapter (384 page) edition of the novel published by XLibris Press. It was in print from November of 2006 to February of 2009, and was their best-selling title for nearly all of that time, with 26,220 copies sold.
6.) Patriots: A Novel of Survival in the Coming Collapse is the title of a 33 chapter (400 page) updated edition of the novel that will soon be out in trade paperback from Ulysses Press of Berkeley, California. (There will not a hardback edition.) This new edition will include both a glossary and an index. Deliveries should commence in April of 2009.
The "Patriots" paperback does not have the appendices that were included in the TEOTWAWKI draft edition. As a public service, the appendices will continue to be available free of charge on this web site. Note that although they are available free, they are copyrighted. Reprinting of any part of the appendices is expressly prohibited.
The Screenplay and Movie Deal
The "Pulling Through" screenplay (formerly titled "Triple Ought"), loosely based on my survival novel, is now available for free download at this web site. Please note that the screenplay is both copyrighted and WGAw registered. Any duplication for commercial use is expressly prohibited.
I am trying to get a feature-length Hollywood movie deal off the ground. But, as yet no production company has bought the screenplay. That is why I've made the screenplay available to a wide audience. Hopefully the right person will see it, and recognize this "property:" for its potential.
I believe that Pulling Through will be the first of a new wave of "ultra-realistic" films. They will be entertaining, thought-provoking, and even educational. The goal is to cast Pulling Through with actors who are already gun enthusiasts. All of the key actors will receive special training from a top-notch firearms training organization such as Front Sight. That will add a lot to the film's realism. Another goal is to mix blank firing with state of the art computer-generated special effects (to create, for example, realistic tracer bullets), and even some scenes of actual live ammunition fire. The live ammo fire will of course require extraordinary safety precautions, but talk about realism! If I have it my way, much of "Pulling Through" will be filmed on location in north-central Idaho.

Patriots: Surviving the Coming Collapse by James Wesley, Rawles: First the stock market and monetary systems crumble. Riots, then disease, stalk the cities. Tens of millions die. Survivors -- in this case, a small band of well-prepared young men and women in rural Idaho -- hang on for years, defending their redoubts against roaming looters.
Then things get really bad.
A provisional federal government shows up, bringing UN troops and national ID cards. The survivors become warriors, striking to take their country back.
That's the compelling premise of Patriots. Even more compelling is the survival-and-military-tactics manual that resides within this novel. The fictional scenes are, as often as not, the vehicle for introducing information about food storage, improvised weapons, emergency surgery, security systems, barter goods, radio communications, home birth and other aspects of real-life survival situations. Very useful, detailed stuff.
You may have seen Patriots, or part of it, before now. Since 1995, it has evolved and its name has morphed from The Gray Nineties to Triple Ought to TEOTWAWKI (The End of the World as We Know It) to its present title. It has improved a great deal since I first saw it.
You could still wish for a more coherent plot. Rawles has a habit of stopping the action just when it gets interesting -- for instance, pages from the end, as the plot seems to be rushing toward climax, the author suddenly introduces a new character whose only function is to spend a chapter lecturing on radio communications. Also, the book isn't exactly subtle; the first bad guys Our Heroes encounter are not only cannibalistic baby killers, but card-carrying Communists, to boot -- a bird more rare these days than the "white supremacist militiaman" the media stalks so devotedly. If you are a non-Christian, you might find yourself feeling distinctly out of the picture at times. Nevertheless, this book has stood the test of time and gets better as it grows.

This book is a real gem. It is both a gripping piece of fiction, as well as
a useful resource on survivalism. I would not have thought it possible for a
survival book to be so interesting, but this one really is. The storyline itself
is very interesting and holds your attention, but in addition to that the book
is full of little pearls of wisdom about how and where to acquire things that
make one better prepared. When I was in the early stages of the book I was impressed
by all of the references. Later when I was most of the way through the book
and still kept finding more and more nuggets of wisdom I was truly amazed. The
breadth of knowledge displayed by the author on a wide variety of subjects is
truly amazing. This book is very well researched, and best of all, it is also
very interesting to read. Several years ago this book might have been simply
an interesting work of fiction, but now in the post-9/11 world it is something
to think seriously about. Also, the opening chapter which focused on the start
of the economic crunch reminded me of the summer of 1997 when Asia and Russia's
economic crises coupled with the near bankruptcy of a large US firm called Long
Term Capital Management and almost sent the world into economic collapse. Add
to that some other recent events such as the bursting of the dot com bubble
in 2000, the stagnation of the economy shortly after 9/11, and the high gas
prices of 2006. It just goes to show, the circumstances in this book are quite
possible, more so than any of us would like to admit.

I must say that I'm very happy that I discovered this book. As I do with most
books, I quickly tried to read it cover to cover but I soon found out that this
book had so much information, I had to slow down and enjoy the book. I have
since reread it several times. My original copy got so dog eared from being
read by friends and being loaned out, that I had to buy a second copy. Everyone
I know, that has read this book, has loved it. True, this book describes a "worst
case" scenario, but that first chapter was a little unnerving. This book
will help you hope for the best....and prepare for the worst.

This is a great book for people
into the survival/militia mentality. I learned so much info. from this book.
I am truly suprised that the fed's are'nt harassing the author like they are
John Ross who wrote "Unintended Consequences". The story is sort of
Red Dawn/Kurt Saxon. A good story with a lot of technical information. I see
in the reviews that people are having trouble getting this book. I first read
it online when the author had it on his website for free. After a couple of
revisions he had it published as it is now. He still has a website that you
can find if you just google his name. I bought my copy off of amazon years ago
before it went out of print. If you really get desperate you can find them at
your local gun show for a lot less than 75.00 bucks. This book is a must for
anyone interested in survivalism.

First off, I read this book a few months ago and enjoyed it. The writing style
is a story/get the point format. The story line is plausible (who knows?) and
the author takes great effort for you to get the right information in the various
scenarios along the way. He adds a lot of how to in the story line. I would
not call myself a "survivalist" or an "end of the world type"
but preparedness is important to my world view, especially if the "SHTF"
does happen in our neighborhood like it often does around the rest of the globe.
I actually think it would make an excellent move in the "Red Dawn"
style but with a lot more satisfying ending.
